The Effect of Tension on the Properties of Resin-Treated Cotton Fabrics

Abstract: The influence of tension on the properties of mercerized and unmercerized resintreated fabrics has been investigated. The fabrics were tensioned in the filling direction by stretching in a tenter frame during drying after bleaching and again during the resin treatment. It was found that the losses in breaking and tearing strengths which accompany the resin treatment of cotton fabrics were reduced by drying under tension. The magnitude of the strength improvement, which occurred only in the stretched direction,… Show more

“…\Vith a view to overcoming the tear and abrasion losses, additives such as butadiene, acrylonitrile latices [29], silicone and polyethylene emulsions [30], and other softening agents have been studied. Attempts have been made to get better results by improving the condition of the cellulose during the reaction either by stretching [9] or by keeping it in a swollen state [4,31].…”

“…The yarns available were a Pima three-ply yarn (120 tex), a Bohshaw and a Deltapine, both two-ply yarns (74 tex). The ply twist inserted was that needed to produce 4 balanced twist in the yarns as delivered from the twister frame. The fibers for the bundles were obtained by defibering the treated yarns.…”

“…In these investigations, mercerization prior to resination was found to materially reduce the losses in tensile and tearing strength, normally associated with resin cross-linking [2,4,12]. It has also been demonstrated [4,12 J that tension during mercerization prior to resin treatment decreases strength losses even more.…”
