Abstract:The variational principle given by Glansdorff and Prigogine for slow viscous flow at non-uniform temperature is used to obtain a first approximation to (i) the drag on a slowly moving sphere and (ii) the torque on a rotating sphere in an unbounded liquid. The results are compared with the work of Hays in which the shear stress in the case of Couette flow between parallel walls maintained at constant temperature is calculated.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
