The effect of temperature on Stokes drag

Abstract: The variational principle given by Glansdorff and Prigogine for slow viscous flow at non-uniform temperature is used to obtain a first approximation to (i) the drag on a slowly moving sphere and (ii) the torque on a rotating sphere in an unbounded liquid. The results are compared with the work of Hays in which the shear stress in the case of Couette flow between parallel walls maintained at constant temperature is calculated.
