A total of sixty one germplasm lines of watermelon were selected based on differences in fruit size. First year (2012), the young seedlings were exposed to low temperature stress 20/10 ± 2°C (day/night) for 15/9 hours (day/night, 21:00 to 06:00 HR) inside the growth chamber for 1-week, then second stress treatment 10/5 ± 2°C was given, and seedlings were maintained at this for continuous 10 days. The control seedlings were throughout maintained at 28 ± 2°C till the end of experiment. Thirteen best performing germ plasmlines were selected based on different growth and physiological traits. Second year (2013), these young seedling were subjected to chilling stress (5/5 ± 2°C, day/night) for 15/9 hours (day/night, 21:00 to 06:00 HR). The seedlings were raised in plug trays filled with commercial soil mixture and kept moist with Hoagland nutrient solution on daily basis. Based on the present experimental findings, 10102, 10124, 10398, and 10491 were selected as best performing germplasm lines for more most of traits (shoot dry weight per plant, stem length per plant, leaf number per plant, root length per plant) studied in chilling stress, and also maintained high cellular membrane integrity, chlorophyll fluorescence, protein content, and peroxidase activity. Hence, chilling stress 5°C was considered to be as better critical range for facile means of selecting tolerant and sensitive germplasm lines at young seedling stage in watermelon based on different growth parameters studied.Additional key words: chilling stress, chlorophyll fluorescence, growth traits, membrane thermostability (MTS), peroxidase (POD) Hort. Summary1 Broadly distributed plants have to cope with dramatic differences across latitude in the prevailing environmental temperature. We investigated the effect of water temperature on plant morphology, biomass accumulation and oxygen-exchange for five clones of the submerged aquatic macrophyte Potamogeton pectinatus L., originating from 42 to 68 ° N. 2 We tested whether P. pectinatus clones show local adaptation to the prevailing environmental temperatures (in which case high-latitude clones would perform better at lower temperatures and vice versa). Alternatively, pronounced phenotypic plasticity in the response to temperature could enable individual clones to perform well over a wide range of environmental temperatures (i.e. high degree of thermal tolerance). 3 The overall pattern of thermal response was similar for all clones. In addition, we detected acclimative phenotypic plasticity in both physiological and morphological plant parameters. The optimum temperatures for gross or for net photosynthesis did not vary with growth temperature, but morphological acclimation partly compensated for the loss of photosynthetic capacity at higher temperatures, enabling comparable rates of ambient gross photosynthesis. Respiratory reactions also showed some degree of thermal acclimation to higher temperatures. 4 As a result of the combined effects of changes in morphology and physiology, all clones produced similar amounts of plant biomass over a relatively wide range of water temperatures. We therefore conclude that P. pectinatus is thermally tolerant and not locally adapted.

The effects of drought stress and/or low temperature stress on total lipid and phospholipid content and fatty acid composition of leaves of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) genotypes differing in growth response at suboptimal temperature were studied. Both drought and low temperature resulted in reduced growth, especially in cv. Farbio, the genotype least tolerant to low temperature. Drought resulted in an increase in total lipid and phospholipid per g fresh weight. On a lipid basis no change in phospholipids or fatty acid content was observed. The fatty acid composition was changed by drought and low temperature, resulting in an increase in the degree of unsaturation. The genotype‐specific reaction to treatment for total lipid content and the degree of unsaturation point to the possibility of a genetic origin for drought‐induced lipid changes, which may be used in a breeding program for improved growth at suboptimal temperature.
