The Effect of Telephone-Based Follow-Up on Adherence, Efficacy, and Toxicity of Oral Capecitabine-Based Chemotherapy

Abstract: These results suggested that pharmacist-led telephone follow-up (TFU) could help in building a close trusting rapport between the patient and caregiving pharmacist. They also demonstrated the potential usefulness of the TFU on patients' tolerability, adherence, and OS; however, further trials with a larger sample size should be encouraged to explore more pronounced results. Otherwise, the provided standard care could be considered good enough for these patients.

“…Several studies have evaluated telephone call interventions among patients on oral chemotherapy, but did not report the number of patients excluded from the intervention due to non-response. 7,10,[19][20][21][22] However, to our knowledge, this is the first study assessing oncology follow-up call response rates. The mean response rate throughout the six months was less than 50%.…”

“…Estratégias de telemonitoramento têm mostrado redução do sofrimento dos pacientes (Beatty, Koczwara, & Wade, 2016).

“…While in 2011, Simons et al highlighted increased adherence to capecitabine with a multidisciplinary approach including pharmacists [5]. Hend et al published the effect of telephone-based follow up on adherence, efficacy, and toxicity of oral capecitabine in May 2019 [6]. Within our institution, telephone-based education and monitoring has been the standard of care since the development of our integrated specialty pharmacy in 2015.…”
