“…Although the rabbit vascular ischemia model is commonly used, there are few animal models of diabetic peripheral neuropathy, most of which are rodents 21-23 . The neuropathy/denervation model that we have used, although not perfect, has been used to study the effect of sensory denervation on hypertrophic scarring in absence of diabetes and vascular ischemia 24 . Due to the bidirectional connection between nerves and inflammatory cells, in a model of ‘denervation only’, we could expect partial wound-healing impairment most likely through dysregulation of inflammation and deficiency of neuropeptides.…”
