Kakamega County is one of the most densely populated regions in Kenya and most people are dependent on agriculture for their livelihood. High population has led to continuous cultivation hence depletion of nutrients through the removal of crop residues, leaching and soil erosion. Inorganic fertilizers can restore soil fertility but are unaffordable for the majority of smallholder farmers living with 1240 KES (10.32 EUR) per month. However, despite government and NGOs interventions towards promoting the use of organic fertilizers in Kakamega County, the adoption rates are still low due to the long waiting period before the compost manure is ready. This study aimed at solving the problem of the period taken by the locally available organic matter to decompose and consequently the quality of the compost manure produced from various treatments. The objective of the study was to examine the effects of EM and Biochar on the rate of decomposition of locally available organic materials under Berkeley composting technique; and to evaluate the nutrient content of compost manure produced from the different treatments. Experimental design was used to examine the effects of EM and Biochar on the rate of decomposition under Berkeley composting technique and to evaluate the nutrient content of compost manure produced from different treatments. Four treatments; (i) Normal Berkeley (Control) (ii) EM+Berkeley (iii) Biochar+Berkeley, and (iv) EM+Biochar+Berkeley were evaluated in a completely randomized block design replicated three times. Nutrient content analysis used; Wet chemistry, LDPSA, PXRF and Mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy. Berkeley Hot/Rapid composting was the most adopted composting technique (28.65%), significance (χ2 = 66.500). Combining Biochar and EM (T4) significantly (P<0.05) accelerated the rate of decomposition of organic matter by attaining the highest temperature of 60°C on the 4th day, followed by compost heap with biochar alone (T3) and compost heaps with EM (T2) which attained the highest temperature of 58°C respectively on the 6th day compared to compost piles without biochar or EM at a temperature of 55°C on 8th day. The results suggest that Biochar and EM accelerate the composting process. pH, total N, K and CEC were not significantly affected by the composting treatments, while Total Carbon was significantly (p<0.05) highest in the Biochar+Berkeley treatment, followed by EM+Berkeley treatment and lowest in EM+Biochar+Berkeley treatment. Phosphorus and Total carbon were also higher in EM compost (1.8% and 5.4%) (p<0.05) compared to non-EM compost (1.2% and 5.0%).

RESUMO A espécie Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi pertencente à família Anacardiaceae ocorre no Brasil desde o estado do Pernambuco até o Rio Grande do Sul. É amplamente utilizada na recomposição de áreas degradadas e arborização urbana, apresenta também importantes propriedades fitoquímicas. Tendo em vista a relevância econômica da espécie, a produção de mudas se torna extremamente importante, entretanto, por apresentar dificuldades de germinação, a propagação é dificultada. Assim, objetivou-se avaliar diferentes métodos de escarificação mecânica e química no estímulo da germinação de sementes. O delineamento experimental foi o inteiramente casualizado, com quatro repetições de 50 sementes em cada tratamento. As avaliações foram realizadas a cada sete dias, durante 28 dias após a inoculação, sendo avaliadas as seguintes características: condutividade elétrica, índice de velocidade de germinação (IVG), primeira contagem de germinação, germinação acumulada, sementes mortas e firmes. A escarificação de sementes de aroeira-vermelha com ácido sulfúrico por 30 minutos ou 30 segundos com lixa P80 oferece novas possibilidades para o aumento da germinação de sementes de S. terebinthifolius, podendo ser aplicado por viveiristas para a produção de mudas em larga escala. Accelerated compost (AC) biotechnology that reduces composting time to less than one month is gradually finding its way to farmers. This study therefore evaluated the fertilizer potential of a brand of commercial AC (OBD-plus) on a degraded Alfisol in Ibadan (derived savannah) and Ultisol in Ikenne (rain forest) of Nigeria, using maize as a test crop. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. The treatments were AC at 0, 60, 90, 120, 150 and 180 kg N ha -1 , mineral fertilizer (NPK 15-15-15) and conventional compost (CC), each at 60 kgN/ha. Data collected on biomass yield, maize grain yield (MGY, t ha -1 ) and post-cropping soil chemical properties were subjected to ANOVA at α0.05. The average highest MGY from Ibadan (3.90) and Ikenne (3.86) were obtained from AC (180 kg N/ha), but these were not significantly different from other AC rates and NPK. The least MGY was obtained from control (2.1 and 2.0) which was significantly less than the CC (3.16 and 2.90). The AC improved the post-cropping soil pH, N and K. The mean MGY obtained from the six levels of AC in Ibadan; 3.44 and 3.98 t ha -1 in 2013 and 2014 were not significantly different from Ikenne (3.41 and 3.84 t ha -1 ). However, maize in Ibadan gave significantly higher biomass yield (19.40 t ha -1 ) than that of Ikenne (17.74 t ha-1) in 2013, with similar trend in 2014. Accelerated compost at 60 kg N ha -1 improved maize grain yield and post cropping soil properties in Ibadan and Ikenne, Nigeria as much as conventional compost. The performance of the accelerated compost was not location dependent in terms of MGY, but resulted in higher biomass production in the derived savannah ecology.
