The Effect of Substrate on Water Quality in Ornamental Fish Tanks

Abstract: Almost all home aquaria contain substrate, either as intentional enrichment or for aesthetic purposes. For fishes, benefits of structural enrichment have been well considered, particularly in research and aquaculture settings. However, our understanding of the impacts of tank substrate as enrichment is limited. While substrate can induce foraging in some species, a major drawback is the potential of substrate to harbour elevated levels of waste and pathogenic bacteria. Here, we considered whether substrate as … Show more

“…This aligns with the RBV theory, emphasizing strategic resources and capabilities that improve firm performance, including environmental practices. Studies by [32,93,94] further reinforce this alignment by emphasizing the constructive correlation between GSCP and firm performance, highlighting its role in reducing the degree of negative impact on the environment.…”

“…The water in the aquariums was also replaced every 48 hours. The experiment used water with the following characteristics: pH 8.5 ± 0.3, Temperature 19 ± 2 °C, and dissolved oxygen 6.4 ± 0.45 mg/L (Vanderzwalmen et al, 2022).…”

“…They also help in filtration, mimicking of the natural environment and enhancing anesthetic appearance of the aquarium. Among the substrates commonly used include pebbles, soil, gravel, sand, aragonite, stones, vermiculate, crushed corals, marbles and clay [21]. The choice of the substrate depends on the culture unit size, water quality effects and associated fish species behavior.…”
