The Effect of Substances of Plant Origin on the Thermal and Thermo-Oxidative Ageing of Aliphatic Polyesters (PLA, PHA)

Abstract: The stabilization efficiency of flavonoids (rutin and hesperidin) in polyester (polylactide (PLA) and polyhydroxyalkaonate (PHA)) composites under oxygen at high temperature was investigated. The polymer was homogenized with three antioxidants then processed by extrusion. The effects of stabilizers on the following physicochemical properties were investigated: melt flow, Vicat softening temperature, surface energy, and color change (Cie-Lab space). The aim of this study was to improve the stability of aliphati… Show more

“…Substances of plant origin are used more and more as functional additives for polymers, mainly biodegradable materials. The combination of biodegradable polymer matrix and modifying additives derived from natural raw materials seems to be very beneficial for both the environment and human health [6,7]. Such fully natural polymeric materials fit perfectly into the current trends of packaging materials and can potentially find wide applications in the packaging industry.…”

“…As those changes may significantly decrease the quality of the produced goods, it is crucial to determine the influence of processing parameters on the properties of PLA and to evaluate the risk of degradation. Among the most distinct degradation mechanisms causing changes to the properties and quality of final PLA products (excluding hydrolytic degradation resulting from processing conditions as well as weathering and different environmental issues [21]) is thermo-oxidative degradation [22][23][24]. According to Cuadri et al [23], when a biodegradable polymer is subjected to shear stress and is additionally exposed to elevated temperature in an oxidative atmosphere, the degradation process is intensified, and can be measured with the relative modification index (RMI).…”

“…Natural antioxidants are also used as functional additives in active food packaging [10]. Particularly noteworthy is the combination of environmentally friendly, biodegradable polymers and plant polyphenols [11]. This combination allows the formation of a fully natural polymeric material, which does not pollute the environment.…”
