The effect of soy and whole milk as a means to store avulsed teeth: A histometric study

Abstract: Background/Aim: An adequate storage medium can help preserve the viability of periodontal ligament cells, favoring the periodontal ligament repair process. The aim of this study was to evaluate the repair process following the delayed replantation of teeth stored in soy milk and whole milk. Material and Methods: The maxillary right incisors of 27 rats were divided into three equally sized groups: Group SM (delayed replantation with storage in soy milk), whose teeth were immersed in 50 mL of soy milk for 60 min… Show more

“…Milk (27.3%) and Hanks Balanced Salt Solution (24.7%) were the commonly chosen options. These results correspond with the studies in the literature which reports similar findings as milk being commonly used transport medium [15], [16]. Milk is available nearly in every household due to its low cost, high rate of consumption, and easy availability along with its properties to preserve PDL cells viability [17].…”

“…Propolis has certain characteristics that encouraged its testing as an effective storage media as it is rich in flavonoids, the most essential pharmacologically active element and potent antioxidant in propolis which explains its potential to maintain cell viability (11)(12)(13) . (15) reported that milk is the most recommended physiologic storage solution for an avulsed tooth so it was selected as a comparison medium in this study.…”

“…In the study by Oikarinen and Seppā, no difference was found between milk and saliva after a 60 minute incubation. [9][10][11] The reason can be explained by the proliferation capacity of PDL cells, which does not decrease more significantly in saliva than in milk during shorter incubation periods. In this study, milk can be suggested as a transport medium for short-term preservation because of its low bacterial content, physiological osmolarity, neutral pH, and nutrients and factors that will ensure PDL cell viability.…”
