The effect of solution focused brief on overcome vaccine hesitancy: A randomized controlled study

Abstract

This study was carried out to determine the effect of solution-focused approach on the elimination of vaccine hesitancy. The research was applied as a quasi-experimental model with pretest-posttest control group. The population of the study included 148 couples (female-male) who did not want to vaccinate their 0-24-month-old babies in Bingöl city, Turkey. Individuals were randomly selected using a simple random sampling method and probability sampling method. The numbers of people who completed the study in the experimental and control groups were 43 and 23, respectively. Four sessions of psychological counseling with a solution-focused brief were applied to each group. The attitude of the parents in the experimental group towards the vaccine changed positively. The confidence in the vaccination of babies between 0-24 months was determine to increase. Although there was no change in the behavior sub-dimension, official records were examined in 1 month after the completion of the study. Six families in the experimental group were determined to vaccinate their children. Solution-focused brief therapy was found to change positively parents’ attitudes and behaviors towards vaccination and to increase healtly lifestyle behaviors.
