The Effect of Single-Dose Administration of Dexamethasone on Postoperative Pain in Patients Undergoing Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy

Abstract: Background:Postoperative pain is considered as a reason of patient’s delay in discharge and disability aggravation. Therefore, multimodal approaches have been suggested in order to mitigate pain and decrease postoperative side effects. Objectives:The aim of this study was to evaluate analgesic effect of a single dose injection of dexamethasone on reducing postoperative pain in laparoscopic cholecystectomy.Patients and Methods:In this double-blind, prospective study, 122 patients aged 18-60 years old, whom were … Show more

“…The plasma half life of Dexamethasone is only about 6 hours (18) suggesting a persistent drug effect unrelated to plasma concentration. Our results are similar with the results of studies by Thangaswamy C at al (18) , Ahmadreza M et al (19) , Jose at al (20) . (21) studied the preemptive Effect of Dexamethasone (0.5 mg kg -1 ) on post-operative opioid requirement in patients who underwent gynecological surgeries.…”

“…Our results are in line with studies by Thangaswamy C et al (18) , Ahmadreza M et al (19) , Becky et al (21) . This is consistent with the fact that Dexamethasone has anti-inflammatory potency, with peak antiinflammatory effect at 12-24 hours and duration of action of 36-54 hours.…”

“…The timings of steroid administration is important to reducing postoperative pain, as initiation of its biological effect is one or two hour of its injection [14]. The dose of dexamethasone 8mg one hour before induction was based on previous reports showing a decrease in postoperative pain [9,15].…”

“…Inappropriate management of postoperative pain extends the duration of hospital stay and may lead to undesirable adverse effects such as respiratory depression and thromboembolic complications [2]. As pre-emptive analgesia is defined as administering analgesics before the start of the painful stimulation, it may inhibit the development of hypersensitization and then result in less post-stimulus pain [3].…”
