Feed cost contributes 80% of the total cost of production in quails. The utilization of cricket meal as a protein source can be a solution to reduce feed costs. The cricket has a high nutritive value, especially protein content, and is one of potential insects to be used as a source of alternative protein to replace fish meal in animal diet. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of cricket meal on the production and physical quality of japanese quail egg (Coturnix coturnix japonica). The experiment used 200 five-week-old female quails with an average body weight of 125.4 g. The completely randomized design (CRD) was employed for the experiments with 5 treatments and 4 replications (10 birds per replication). The dietary treatments were T0: diet without cricket meal, T1: diet containing 2% cricket meal to replace 25% of fish meal, T2: diet containing 4% cricket meal to replace 50% of fish meal, T3: diet containing 6% cricket meal to replace 75% of fish meal, and T4: diet containing 8% cricket meal to replace 100% of fish meal. Results revealed that utilization of cricket meal in the quail ration significantly increased egg production (P<0.05) and positively affected physical quality of quail eggs, such as egg weight, egg white weight, eggshell weight, and yolk score. It can be concluded that cricket meal can partially or fully replace fish meal in the diet of layer quails.

The study was conducted at wet laboratory of Faculty of Fisheries, Rangil, Ganderbal, SKUAST-Kashmir, India from the time period of March to June, 2019 on scale carp fingerlings (Cyprinus carpio var. communis) to determine the growth performance by measuring RNA:DNA ratio in scale carp after fed with dietary protein level. The fingerlings were fed with three different levels of silkworm pupae supplement [17.51 g 100 g-1 (T1), 14.42 g 100 g-1 (T2), 11.33 g 100 g-1 (T3)] and a control in which no silkworm pupae was included. RNA:DNA ratio were highest in T1 (1.609), followed by T2 (1.526) and T3 (1.239) while the control showed the lowest ratio (0.929). Similarly, fingerlings fed with Silkworm pupae supplemented diets (T1, T2 and T3) exhibited relatively better growth in terms of body weight gain, % weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and protein efficiency ratio (PER) as compared to the control. The highest weight gain of 2.4 g was recorded in T1 followed by T2 (2.09 g) and T3 (1.52 g) while the control achieved the lowest weight gain of 0.72 g. Overall, the results revealed that T1 performed better as compared to the rest treatments and control. In general, the RNA:DNA ratio and growth results correlate with each other in different treatments and control. So, RNA:DNA ratio seems to be as an effective and rapid indicator of growth performance.

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh substituti tepung ikan dengan tepung pupa ulat sutera terhadap biaya produksi dan keuntungan pada puyuh petelur. Penelitian ini menggunakan rancangan acak lengkap (RAL) yang terdiri dari 4 perlakuan, 4 ulangan dengan masing-masing ulangan terdiri dari 10 ekor puyuh. Perlakuan pakan yang diberikan adalah R0: pakan mengandung 8% tepung ikan, tanpa tepung pupa ulat sutera (kontrol), R1: pakan mengandung tepung pupa ulat sutera menggantikan 25% protein dari tepung ikan, R2: pakan mengandung tepung pupa ulat sutera menggantikan 50% protein dari tepung ikan, dan R3: pakan mengandung tepung pupa ulat sutera menggantikan 75% protein dari tepung ikan. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis menggunakan analisis ragam (ANOVA). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa substitusi tepung pupa ulat sutera berpengaruh nyata (P<0,05) meningkatkan biaya pakan, pendapatan dan IOFC selama 8 minggu pemeliharaan. Level terbaik untuk menghasilkan pendapatan dan IOFC yang tertinggi adalah penambahan tepung pupa ulat sutera menggantikan 25% protein dari tepung ikan.
