This study investigated role of the self-directed learning skills, metacognitive awareness, and 21st century skills and competences in predicting readiness for online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. 21st Century Skills and Competences Scale, Self-Directed Learning Skills Scale, Metacognitive Awareness Inventory, and Readiness for Online Learning Scale were used to collect data from 834 prospective teachers. Structural equation modelling (SEM) results indicated that self-directed learning skills, metacognitive awareness, and 21st century skills and competences positively predict prospective teachers' readiness for online learning. These findings suggested that enhancing prospective teachers' self-directed learning, metacognitive awareness, and 21st century skills and competences may promote their readiness for online learning.

The development of information and communication technology in the digital era encourages the use of smartphones in various fields of life, such as the field of education. This condition opens up opportunities for the use of smartphones in teaching and learning activities. This study was conducted to identify opportunities for using smartphones to make it easier for students to learn, especially in understanding sociology learning materials in high school. This type of research is descriptive qualitative research. The research subjects were social studies students of class X SMA with a total of 149 students. Data collection methods in this study were surveys and interviews using questionnaires and interview guidelines as research instruments. Data analysis was carried out in four stages, namely (1) data collection, (2) data reduction, (3) data presentation, and (4) drawing conclusions. The results of this study indicate that there is a great opportunity for the use of smartphones in the digital era in the learning process, especially sociology in high school. The opportunity is the implementation of game-based mobile learning or Mobile Game-Based Learning (MGBL). It is known that the use of smartphones by students is most dominantly used to play games with a percentage of 32.90%. Thus, Mobile Game-Based Learning (MGBL) as a learning medium is an opportunity to use smartphones to make it easier for students to learn sociology because it encourages students to be more active, creative, and innovative in the learning process. The conclusion of this study is that Mobile Game-Based Learning (MGBL) is a great opportunity for using smartphones in the digital era to make it easier for students to learn sociology in high school.

Due to the global outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), new regulations require students to study from home so that students must be able to study independently. This study aimed to analyze teachers' perceptions of self-directed learning (SDL) and SDL components that can be identified from online learning activities assigned by teachers during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research was designed in the form of embedded mixed-method research. An English teacher at a high school was selected as a participant. Furthermore, data were collected through questionnaires, observations, and classification tables. The results showed that: 1) with a score of 4.00, teachers perceive themselves as "knowledgeable" about SDL knowledge, with a score of 3.57, teachers perceive themselves as "expected" or often carry out learning activities that support SDL, with a score of 3.88, teachers assessing the impact of SDL as “influential” on students, 2) components of SDL reflected through online learning activities assigned by the teacher are “developing a sense of belonging to students in learning” and “developing student self-monitoring” and self-management.” Thus, teachers perceive SDL positively, and there are two components of SDL promoted by teachers' online learning activities.
