The Effect of Seed Source and Pre-sowing Treatment on Germination of Canarium schweinfurthii [Engl] Seeds

Abstract: This study examined the effect of seed source and pre-sowing treatment on germination of Canarium schweinfurthii [Engl] seeds. The seeds were sourced from Unubi in Anambra state (T1) and Jos in Plateau state (T2) in Nigeria. The experiment was conducted at the University of Benin and lasted for 14 weeks. It was laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD) pattern using 2x7 factorial combinations of 2 sources and 7 pre-sowing treatments. The pre-sowing treatments were complete removal of seed coat (CR… Show more

“…Germination is usually the growth of a plant contained within a seed Anozie and Oboho [9], it leads to the formation of a young seedling, it is also the process of reactivation of metabolic machinery of the seed resulting in the emergence of radicle and plumule.…”

“…However, significant progress has been made in Allanblackia parviflora by using proximal and longitudinal sections and by stratifying whole seeds at warm temperature to improve imbibition [149]. Scarification to break seed dormancy was achieved in C. schweinfurthii by physically cracking, removing or burning the seedcoat, to facilitate domestication by farmers [357]. Likewise, the germination of G. kola seeds has been improved by mechanical scarification, storage at room temperature and pretreatment with gibberellic acid (GA3) [358].…”

“…Tropical forest is known to be very rich in species diversity as well as a home for different variety of micro and macro-organisms including wildlife, due to the unique microclimate it creates [1]. Due to rapid forest depletion in the tropics, the supplies of many useful forest products such as Annona muricata are severely threatened with serious consequences on the well-being of the local people who depend on these products.…”
