The Effect of Scaling Building Configuration Blast Experiments on Positive Phase Blast Wave Parameters

Abstract: Explosions in an urban setting can have a significant negative impact. There is a need to further understand the loading effects caused by the blast’s interaction with structures. In conjunction with this, the effects of scaling and understanding the limitations of laboratory experiments are equally important given the cost incurred for full-scale experiments. The aim of this study was to determine the scaling effects on blast wave parameters found for reduced-scale urban blast scenario laboratory experiments.… Show more

“…The threats to critical infrastructures such as hyperloop systems exist in the transportation industry [38][39][40][41]. In many countries, such a risk is deemed to be very to extremely high [42][43][44]. Our study is thus critical to protect and to improve resilience of the transportation infrastructures.…”

“…These better methodologies could significantly advance the prediction, mitigation, and response to explosive events in cityscapes in the future. Gabriel et al [2] present experimental and modeling work on urban blast loads and addresses the issue of scaling, showing the potential of inter-scaling between idealized lab-scale experiments involving a few grams of plastic explosive to larger-scale outdoor field trials conducted using TNT.…”
