The Effect of Rubber Type and Rubber Functionality on the Morphological and Mechanical Properties of Rubber-toughened Polyamide 6/Polypropylene Nanocomposites

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Rubber toughened polyamide 6/polypropylene (PA6/PP) nanocomposites containing 4 wt % of organophilic modified montmorilonite (OMMT) were produced by melt compounding followed by injection moulding. Four different types of elastomer were incorporated into the blends as a toughener, i.e., ethylene-octene elastomer (POE), ethylene-propylene elastomer (EPR), maleated POE (POEgMAH) and maleated EPR (EPRgMAH). The influences of maleating on the interfacial adhesion and mechanical properties of the nanocompo… Show more

“…This is supported by the fact that the modulus of the rubber remains essentially unchanged at higher doses. 26 Elongation at break ( Figure 8) and residual elongation ( Figure 9) decrease significantly when augmenting the irradiation dose. Such decline is expected as the rubber becomes increasingly rigid as a consequence of the increase in crosslink density with irradiation.…”

“…Hybrid materials organic/inorganic with a clay matrix have been studied for around thirty years. These materials are used as environmental barriers as pollutant absorber, as fillers in polymers, as catalytic supports or as chemical sensors . The synthesis of organotalc was motivated by various applications for which natural talc is not or is less competitive.…”

“…The obtained results indicated that the decomposition temperature is significantly improved with the incorporation of the nano‐organoclay, suggesting the confirmation of exfoliated structures. The significant increases in thermal stability resulting from the exfoliated clay platelets may be due to kinetic effects, with the platelets retarding the diffusion of oxygen into the polymer matrix .…”
