Electrocardiographic reference values were established on apparently healthy buzzards (Buteo buteo) in Lugo (Spain) from March 1997 to June 1999. All birds were anesthetized with isofluorane and placed in dorsal recumbence. The standard and augmented unipolar limb leads electrocardiograms were recorded in 65 buzzards. The wave forms were analyzed in lead II at 50 mm/sec and at 1 cm ϭ 1 mV to determine P, PR, QRS, T and QT durations and P, QRS and T amplitudes. The polarity of each wave form was tabulated in all leads. The mean electrical axis (MEA) for the frontal plane was calculated using leads II and III. The mean heart rate was 325.2 Ϯ 52.9 beats/min. In lead II, the P wave was positive, the dominant pattern of QRS complex was QS and the T wave was always positive. The average value of the MEA was Ϫ99.2 Ϯ 7.7Њ. Establishment of normal electrocardiogram (EKG) values will facilitate a better understanding of EKG changes seen in many diseases of these birds.

SUMMARYElectrocardiographic reference values and configurations were established in apparently healthy African grey (Psittacus erithacus; n=45) and Amazon (Amazona spp.; n = 37) parrots, using standard limb leads. In 31 of the African grey parrots and 32 of the Amazon parrots electrocardiograms were made during isoflurane-anaesthesia. Significant differences between anaesthetized and unanaesthetized birds were found only for the median heart rate and QTinterval (P<0.05). Significant differences between the two genera were found for the duration of the P-and T-waves, the voltage of the T-wave and for the mean electrical axis.Sinus arrhythmias and ventricular premature beats were present in 5 to 10% of the tracings.

This study was conducted (at high altitude [1969 meters]) to determine whether chicks predisposed to cardiac failure and ascites could be identified and followed during growout with non-invasive electrocardiographic (ECG) techniques. ECG recordings were made on 40 chicks at 1 week of age. All recordings were analyzed by quantifying the amplitude in millivolts of the R-, S-, and T-waves in each of the recordings. During the study, ascites-related mortality was 40%, with the majority of the deaths occurring between 5 and 8 weeks of age. Chicks exhibiting moderate-to-severe right ventricular hypertrophy, as identified by ECG analysis at 1 week of age, were predisposed to development of ascites. Thus, the variability in ascites-related mortality observed in field cases may be directly related to the number of predisposed chicks at the time of placement in the broiler house.
