Hydropower is an affordable, sustainable way to generate electricity. Research on hydraulic jumps focuses only on determining head loss across the jump, but there are no studies on generating power from the jump. This research aims to utilize energy dissipated from hydraulic jumps for power-generating purposes and further use this power in real-life applications. This research simulates ideal hydraulic conditions to identify the most stable hydraulic jumps, which will be used to generate power. The Seriakos barrage in Egypt was taken as a case study to simulate energy dissipated/power generated from hydraulic jumps generated downstream. This power is then used to simulate lighting up some streets in Egypt according to Egyptian power consumption standards. An Excel spreadsheet was used to mathematically model generated hydraulic jump types, energy dissipated, and generated power. The study found that submerged flow generates maximum power values from hydraulic jumps as opposed to free flow. The research concluded that energy produced by hydraulic jumps at the Seriakos barrage could light up 78 street light bulbs. Although this is a small amount of power, Egypt could meet a significant portion of its energy needs if hydraulic jumps from all its hydraulic structures were utilized for power generation. The failure of an embankment causes loss of lives, massive damage to infrastructure and the interruption of basic facilities; it has thus drawn increasing attention from researchers. When compared to other types of embankment disasters, overtopping-related embankment breaches are much more frequent. The study of the breach mechanism of embankments due to overtopping is becoming more and more essential for developing evacuation plans, early warning systems and damage assessment. To recognize the breach activities of embankments, it is necessary to find out discrete breach considerations like breach depth, breach initiation, breach width, etc. In the present study, a total of six tests were performed in a narrow flume using an embankment model. By conducting different experiments, it was observed that embankment breaching may be described in three stages, i.e., initial erosion, headcut erosion and lateral erosion. Furthermore, erosion is a three-dimensional process that occurs during embankment breaching, with the majority of erosion movement being associated with lateral broadening. The rate of headcut migration also has an impact on the widening rate. Furthermore, it depends upon the type of fill material and dam geometry. Also, the observed effect of moisture content on breach widening proved that the rate of widening was strongly influenced by water content. A drop of about 50% in moisture content causes approximately a 20% decrease in time to failure. In the present study, it is observed that breach shape could not be assumed to be regular shape like rectangle or trapezoid, as described in the literature. The trials were carried out in a narrow flume under constant hydraulic conditions, which are two of the study’s limitations.

Modeling of scour hole characteristics under turbulent wall jets using machine learning

The novelty of the present study is to investigate the parameters that depict the scour hole characteristics caused by turbulent wall jets and develop new mathematical relationships for them. Four significant parameters i.e., depth of scouring, location of scour depth, height of the dune and location of dune crest are identified to represent a complete phenomenon of scour hole formation. From the gamma test, densimetric Froude number, apron length, tailwater level, and median sediment size are found to be the key parameters that affect these four dependent parameters. Utilizing the previous data sets, Multi Regression Analysis (linear and non-linear) has been performed to establish the relationships between the dependent parameters and influencing independent parameters. Further, artificial neural network-particle swarm optimisation (ANN-PSO) and gene expression programming (GEP) based models are developed using the available data. In addition, results obtained from these models are compared with proposed regression equations and the best models are identified employing statistical performance parameters. The performance of the ANN-PSO model (RMSE = 1.512, R2 = 0.605), (RMSE = 6.644, R2 = 0.681), (RMSE = 6.386, R2 = 0.727) and (RMSE = 1.754, R2 = 0.636) for predicting four significant parameters are more satisfactory than that of regression and other soft computing techniques. Overall, by analysing all the statistical parameters, uncertainty analysis and reliability index, ANN-PSO model shows good accuracy and predicts well as compared to other presented models.
