Knowing the reproductive biology of threatened species is essential for conservation and to establish proper management plans. Heleobia atacamensis, a freshwater snail only known from two locations in the Atacama Saltpan, northern Chile, is currently classified as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List and Critically Endangered by the Ministerio del Medio Ambiente of Chile. Based on size-frequency distribution, multivariate analysis of shell measurements, and microdissections, we studied the reproductive strategy, recruitment period, sex ratio and sexual dimorphism in this species. Heleobia atacamensis is an oviparous species, with direct development (non-planktotrophic). Females lay capsules of a single egg from which a juvenile resembling a miniature adult hatches after intracapsular metamorphosis is completed. The development type was confirmed by the observation of a paucispiral protoconch (= protoconch I) using scanning electron microscopy. Recruitment was observed across the four seasons of the year, with an increment at the end of austral summer. Results also showed that sex ratio was 1:1, whereas sexual dimorphism was not detected using univariate and multivariate analysis of the shell. The reproductive data provided in this study are a starting point for future management plans.

The EFSA Panel on Plant Health performed a pest categorisation of Naupactus leucoloma Boheman (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) for the EU territory. N. leucoloma is a polyphagous pest reported to feed on 385 plant species; cultivated hosts include alfalfa, beans, brassicas, carrots, clover, onions, peas, potatoes and soft fruits. N. leucoloma is native to eastern South America. During the first half of the 20th century, it spreads to Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and the USA. In 2005, it was reported in the Azores where it occurs in the wild. In suitable conditions, N. leucoloma can develop from egg to adult in about 12 months with adults emerging during spring and summer. Outside of South America only females are known, they develop and lay eggs without fertilisation. Eggs are usually laid in the soil but can be laid on the stem or lower leaves of hosts. Larval root feeding causes damage to root surfaces leading to stunting and yield or quality losses. Larvae can tunnel inside potato tubers causing significant losses. Pupation takes place in the soil in spring and summer. Larvae and eggs that are laid late in the summer overwinter. Plants for planting and plant products, such as potatoes, provide potential pathways for entry into the EU. The suitable climate and the wide availability of host plants provide conditions to support the establishment of N. leucoloma in the EU. N. leucoloma is regulated in the EU by Commission Implementing Regulation 2019/2072 (Annex IIA). The import of soil or growing medium, from third countries other than Switzerland, is prohibited in the EU and therefore so far inhibited the entry of N. leucoloma larvae and pupae. All criteria assessed by EFSA for consideration either as a potential union quarantine pest or as a potential regulated non‐quarantine pest are met.

Naupactus cervinus is a parthenogenetic weevil native to South America that is currently distributed worldwide. This flightless species is polyphagous and capable of modifying gene expression regimes for responding to stressful situations. Naupactus cervinus was first reported in the Continental US in 1874 and has rapidly colonized most of the world since. Previous studies suggested that an invader genotype successfully established even in areas of unsuitable environmental conditions. In the present work we analyze mitochondrial and nuclear sequences from 59 individuals collected in 13 localities across three states in the Southern US in order to describe the genetic diversity in this area of introduction not previously studied. Our results suggest that 97% of the samples carry the most prevalent invader genotype already reported, while a few show a novel mitochondrial derivative. This would support the hypothesis of a general purpose genotype capable of coping with adverse conditions and enlarging its geographical range. Given the historical introduction records and the prevalence of the invader genotype, it is possible that the continental US may act as a secondary source of introductions to other areas. Parthenogenesis and its associated lack of recombination could be useful in maintaining the linkage of genetic variants that facilitate colonization of distant, inadequate areas. We propose that scarce genetic variation in places of introduction may in fact be an asset that allows N . cervinus to thrive across a range of environmental conditions.
