The effect of proinflammatory cytokines in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Abstract: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a debilitating disorder and its pathophysiology is associated with deregulation of the immune system. We investigated the changes in circulating levels of proinflammatory cytokines (specifically IL-6 and TNF-α) measured by the ELISA kit in two psychotherapeutic interventions for MDD: Narrative Cognitive Therapy (NCT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This is a randomized clinical trial including 97 individuals (18 to 29years-old) with MDD. In CBT there was a significant… Show more

“…A pilot study found that cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) reduced the depressive symptoms and the mean level of the proinflammatory cytokine interleukin (IL)‐6 in 11 females experiencing their first depressive episode . In a follow‐up study, Moreira et al found that CBT without pharmacotherapy reduced the levels of both IL‐6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)α, while Narrative Cognitive Therapy (NCT), less effective in reducing depressive symptoms, did not.…”

“…[7][8][9][10] Depression treatments, both pharmacologic and psychotherapeutic, have been shown to work, but are affected by the inflammatory environment and can be improved upon by understanding and addressing the underlying mechanism. [11][12][13][14][15] At the same time, increased awareness of inflammatory mechanisms has led to a paradigmatic shift in the understanding of cancer biology and treatments. One such discovery is the relationship between tumor mutation burden (TMB) or tumor mutation load and immunotherapy response based on the underlying association between creating neoantigens and adaptive immunity response.…”

“…The method of treatment by utilizing acupoint points such as acupuncture can improve physical health known through TNF-α expression and is expected to have a positive impact on depression and anxiety disorders [9], [10]. Psychological therapy given can also reduce levels of TNF-α through decreased anxiety [11].…”
