The effect of probiotic Lactobacillus casei Shirota on knee osteoarthritis: a randomised double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial

Abstract: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) treatment is challenging due to inefficacy and adverse effects of current medications. Probiotic treatment has been shown to promote bone metabolism, reduce pain and inflammatory responses of age-related musculoskeletal disorders, including OA. We aimed to investigate the effect of probiotic Lactobacillus casei Shirota (LcS) on patients with knee OA. 537 patients with knee OA were enrolled in this double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, who were randomised to receive skimmed milk conta… Show more

“…Probiotics and prebiotics, which are safe and effective dietary substances that can be used for elaborating microbial communities 89 , are plausible therapeutic options for obesity-associated OA. A randomized double-blind clinical trial proposed that commercial probiotic L. casei Shirota exhibited beneficial effects on the treatment outcomes of knee joints afflicted with OA 90 . Supplementation with prebiotic fiber in the form of oligofructose could reverse the detrimental effects of fat-enriched diets on gut microbial communities by increasing the abundance of beneficial Bifidobacteria at the expense of numerous proinflammatory microbes, while inducing a considerable and consistent reduction in metabolic inflammation.…”

“…Previous studies have shown several beneficial effects of probiotic supplementation on glycemic control in PCOS patients [ 9 , 10 ]. Moreover, some researchers have demonstrated that probiotic consumption in patients with osteoarthritis [ 11 ], type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) [ 12 ], and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) [ 13 ] was associated with decreased inflammatory markers. On the other hand, selenium supplementation has been reported to improve antioxidant parameters in patients with metabolic syndrome [ 14 ].…”

“…Recent evidence suggested that inflammation (Lei et al, 2017) and oxidative stress (Chin and Ima-Nirwana, 2018) are involved in the underlying mechanism leading to the cartilage degradation in OA. Not surprisingly, OA…”
