The Effect of Ponderal Index at Birth on the Relationships Between Common LEP and LEPR Polymorphisms and Adiposity in Adolescents

Abstract: on behalf of the HELENA study groupThis study examined the effect of ponderal index (PI) at birth on the relationships between eight common polymorphisms of the leptin (LEP) and leptin receptor (LEPR) genes and adiposity in adolescents. A total of 823 European adolescents (45.4% girls) aged 14.8 ± 1.4 years were genotyped for the LEP (rs2167270, rs12706832, rs10244329, rs2071045, and rs3828942) and LEPR (rs1137100, rs1137101, and rs8179183) polymorphisms. The PI was calculated from parental reports of birth we… Show more

“…The same allele has also shown retention of cancer-specific symptoms, if managed only with non-androgen deprivation treatment methods 101 . The SNPs rs130067, rs10244329, and rs12529 have been previously reported by groups working on various diseases related to and causing PCa in Caucasian populations such as rheumatoid arthritis 13 , obesity 102 , and sex hormone metabolic pathway 11,103,104 respectively. The rs12529 SNP is also related to lung cancer 105 and bladder cancer 106 .…”

“…These nonsynonymous substitutions were putative candidate polymorphisms that resulted in size differences. Indeed, two genes (LEPR and FANCC) overlapping with nonsynonymous substitutions are reported as associated with body growth and development in some mammals [43,44]. In humans, impaired LEPR function exerts a strong negative effect on ponderal index at birth and height in adolescence [44].…”
