The Effect of Platelet-Rich Fibrin, Calcium Sulfate Hemihydrate, Platelet-Rich Plasma and Resorbable Collagen on Soft Tissue Closure of Extraction Sites

Abstract: Rapid and complete soft tissue healing after tooth extraction minimizes surgical complications and facilitates subsequent implant placement. We used four treatment methods and assessed changes in soft tissue socket closure following tooth extraction in humans. The effects of platelet-rich fibrin-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (PRF-CSH), platelet-rich plasma-calcium sulfate hemihydrate (PRP-CSH), a resorbable collagen dressing (RCD), and no grafting material were compared in a randomized, controlled pilot study wi… Show more

“…Moreover, the use of L‐PRF in third molars’ extractions has been associated with an improvement in second molars’ periodontal parameters (Kumar, Prasad, Ramanujam, Dexith & Chauhan, ) and a nearly tenfold decrease in the incidence of osteomyelitis compared to natural healing (Hoaglin & Lines, ). However, other RCTs and controlled studies did not confirm significant advantages when comparing L‐PRF to unassisted socket healing in terms of alveolar bone resorption and bone density (Girish Rao, Bhat, Nagesh, Rao & Mirle, ; Srinivas, Das, Rana, Qureshi & Vaidya, ; Zhang et al., ), periodontal parameters (Baslarli, Tumer, Ugur & Vatankulu, ), bone scintigraphy outcomes (Baslarli et al., ; Gurbuzer, Pikdoken, Urhan, Suer & Narin, ), post‐operative morbidities, prevention of dry socket and soft tissue closure (Asmael, Jamil & Hasan, ; Asutay, Yolcu, Gecor, Acar & Ozturk, ; Yerke, Jamjoom, Zahid & Cohen, ). Two case series quantified radiographically (CBCT) (Anwandter, Bohmann, Nally, Castro & Quirynen, ) and clinically (Simon, Gupta & Tajbakhsh, ) the ridge changes of L‐PRF‐treated sockets at 4 months of healing, which ranged between 0.03 mm and 0.67 mm in height, and between 1.33 mm and 0.57 mm in width.…”

“…Four notches were made to represent the midpoints of the buccal, palatal, mesial, and distal dimensions of the tooth and served as reference points for socket dimension measurements. Furthermore, measurements were conducted by placing the probe exactly perpendicularly and at the mid-portion of the socket both bucco-palatally and mesio-distally on the stent and comparing changes in the inner part of the soft-tissue edges to the nearest 1 mm [ 32 ].…”
