The effect of phenolic compounds on the green synthesis of iron nanoparticles (FexOy-NPs) with photocatalytic activity

Abstract: The green synthesis of nanoparticles allows for obtaining nanomaterials using plant extracts, avoiding the use of toxic and dangerous chemical compounds. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of phenolic compounds in plant extracts on the synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe x O y -NPs) with photocatalytic activity. Accordingly, the phenolic content in 11 plant extracts was evaluated by the Folin-Ciocalteu (F-C) method, and the iron-reducing capacity was evaluated by the ferric-reducing antioxi… Show more

“…However, our results are in accordance with previous studies reporting phenolic acids as the predominant phenolic compounds in E. globulus leaves. Among the less abundant polyphenols, ellagitannins have been described prevail, which is in line with the results obtained for the HRW [ 7 , 10 , 12 , 13 , 15 , 35 , 36 , 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 , 42 ].…”

“…Others polyphenols were also detected, such as ellagitannins, quercetin derivatives, and luteolin 7- O -glucuronide. Regarding the phenolic profiles of E. globulus leaves, the chemical composition is very heterogeneous, and can vary according to geographic region and the extractive solvent, as illustrated in several studies [ 7 , 10 , 13 , 35 , 36 , 37 ]. However, our results are in accordance with previous studies reporting phenolic acids as the predominant phenolic compounds in E. globulus leaves.…”

“…The synthesis of nanoparticles of iron nanoparticles and their oxides were strongly influenced by the concentration of antioxidant compounds within the various plant extracts used, where the plants with high phenolic content were found to display the greatest reductive capabilities [45,46]. Despite some anomalies, the majority of the iron-based nanoparticles were discovered to be spherical with slight agglomeration, and an average particle size of approximately 58 nm (Table S7) [47,48].…”

“…Chemically, these secondary metabolites are complex but are environment-friendly and play a significant role in reducing and stabilizing metallic ions [ 37 ]. Micronutrients existing in plants and their derivatives are called phenols [ 45 ]. Phenols in the plant extracts are the main compounds for the synthesis and stabilization of NPs [ 46 ].…”

“…Phenols in the plant extracts are the main compounds for the synthesis and stabilization of NPs [ 46 ]. Salgado et al [ 45 ] reported that phenolic compounds act as effective precursors during the formation of FeNPs from Eucalyptus . Polyphenols are favorable as anti-oxidants, anticancer agents, and antimicrobials [ 47 ].…”
