“…Alongside well-known in vitro effects of a wide range of antibiotics on granulocyte chemotaxis and lymphocyte function, this may also indicate the likelihood of treatment associated alterations in peripheral blood neutrophil counts that may reflect the selective increase in bacteria populations not covered by the prescribed antibiotic regimen. Notably, in mice treated with antibiotic effective against gram-positive bacteria, selective increase of gram negative populations of bacteria in colon and stool was shown to be accompanied by the increased percentage of neutrophils in peripheral blood of antibiotic treated mice as compared with the control mice [28].…”

“…The weight/length ratio of the colon is used as a marker of hyperplasia of the mucosa and of the severity of chronic colitis; because DSS induces a shortening of the colon, this can be used as a visual index and has been used for the study of foods with anti-inflammatory potential (Cuéllar-Núñez et al, 2018;Elimrani et al, 2017). Furthermore, a characteristic of intestinal inflammation is the thickening and shortening of the large bowel which can be measured in mice as an increase in the colon weight/length ratio, which is and indirect indicator of colonic edema and inflammation (Sydora et al, 2012;Daniluk et al, 2017). Okayasu et al (1990) proposed a model for the induction of chronic ulcerative colitis with DSS and found that the colon of DSS-treated animals was significantly shorter than in non-treated animals.…”

“…For example, in a mouse model, intestinal TH17 cells contributed to development of a microbiota that maintained metabolic homeostasis [29]. Mice treated with penicillin demonstrated a elevated percent of B cells, regulatory T cells, T helper 1 (Th1) and T helper 2 (Th2) cells, but a decreased percent of total CD4+ cell [30]. Treg cell numbers are normalized when the microbiota is reconstituted in germ-free mice, and their development appears to be driven by a mixture of clostridial species [31].…”
