The Effect of Peer Education on the Teaching of Nursing Skills

Abstract

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of peer education on the teaching of nursing skills. Method:This study was conducted by using a pre-test and post-test control group pattern and was carried out with 44 students (test=23; control=21). The five basic nursing skills students learn for the first time were transferred to the test group by means of student peer education and were transferred to the control group using existing teaching methods. A skills assessment was conducted immediately after completion of the course as well as one week later. Results:In the assessment performed immediately after teaching the skill, the students in the test group had a higher rate of completed skills in research than the students in the control group. The second assessment also showed a higher ratio in this group than in the control group.In addition, it was determined that the students in the experimental group applied all skills during the second assessment at a higher rate than during the first assessment. Conclusion:The results indicate that the skills of students who learned in the peer group were more developed, better reinforced, and retained longer than the skills of students who learned with the current teaching methods.
