“…As hypothesized, we observed familial warmth to be positively associated with self‐esteem, irrespective of gender stratification. Our results mirrored similar findings from prior studies with LGBTQ+ young adults (Lawson et al, 2019; Ryan et al, 2010; Snapp et al, 2015). Contrary to our hypothesis, being out to any family members about one's LGBTQ+ identity was not associated with self‐esteem among both gender stratified groups.…”

“…Prior studies offer robust support for the roles of familial warmth and acceptance in behavioral and psychosocial adjustment among LGBTQ+ young adults (Coulter et al, 2019;Feinstein, Wadsworth, Davila, & Goldfried, 2014;Lawson, Scroggs, & Vennum, 2019;McConnell, Birkett, & Mustanski, 2015;Parra, Bell, Benibgui, Helm, & Hastings, 2017;Ryan, Russell, Huebner, Diaz, & Sanchez, 2010;Snapp, Watson, Russell, Diaz, & Ryan, 2015). Yet, there has been less research on how familial warmth shapes LGBTQ+ adolescents' self-esteem.…”

“…These studies provide evidence of the importance of family relationships for SMY, in some cases influencing whether SMY disclose their sexual identity to family. Qualitative and quantitative studies reveal that positive family relationships and family acceptance are protective factors for racially diverse SMY and associated with increased well-being into adulthood (Katz-Wise et al, 2016;Lawson et al, 2019). Parent-child relationships following disclosure tend to get better over time, even if the initial reactions were negative (Ghosh, 2019).…”

“…As adolescents begin to develop a sense of autonomy, they begin to separate from their family of origin, turning, instead to their peers for support (Segrin, 2003). Even with these relational changes, prior research has illuminated the long‐term implications of familial support as individuals transition from adolescence to adulthood (e.g., Lawson et al, 2019). For sexual minority adolescents, feeling a sense of acceptance from one's family has been found to be associated with a positive sense of self‐esteem (Ryan et al, 2010).…”
