Rhizoctonia solani J.G. Kühn is a serious soilborne pathogen in chilli fields worldwide. This study examined the effect of biofumigation using arta (Calligonum polygonoides L.) and olive (Olea europaea L.) plant material on chilli growth and recovery of R. solani from chilli plants. The Gliva Rhizoctonia solani J.G. Kühn je pomembne talni pathogen na poljih čilijev širom po svetu. V raziskavi je bil preučen učinek biofumigacije z vrsto dresnovk (Calligonum polygonoides L.) in pripravki iz oljke (Olea europaea L.) na rast čilijev in njihovega uspevanja po inokulaciji z glivo R. solani . Poskus je bil izveden v rastlinjaku kot lončni poskus, v katerem prsti niso dodali ničesar (kontrola) ali z dodatkom rastlinskih delov vrst Calligonum in Olea (oljčni listi ali pepel iz njih). Čiliji so bili posajeni v prst z dodatki in inokulirani z glivo R. solani. Zabeležena je bila višina rastlin, število plodov in frekvenca okrevanih rastlin po inokulaciji z glivo R. solani. Dodatki delov vrste Calligonum k prsti so rezultirali k najmanjši obnovi glive R. solani. Še več, dodatki delov te vrste so povečali višino in suho maso čilijev v primerjavi z drugimi obravnavanji. Tudi obravnavanja s pripravki iz oljke so zavrla rast glive R. solani in pospešila rast čilijev v primerjavi s kontrolo. Pripravki iz vrste C. polygonoides in oljke so lahko biofumigacijska sredstva za nadzor talne glive R. solani.

In this study we investigated the enantioselective degradation of (2RS,3RS)-paclobutrazol in peach and mandarin fruits under field conditions after foliar treatment at 500 mg active ingredient/L using a Lux Cellulose-1 chiral column on a reverse-phase liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry system. Degradations of paclobutrazol in both fruits followed first-order kinetics, with half-lives of about 9 days. Initial deposits were 1.63 mg/kg on peach and 1.99 mg/kg on mandarin; terminal concentrations were lower than 0.05 mg/kg, which was acceptable in most cases. As anticipated, paclobutrazol levels in peels of mature mandarin were about 6.3 times higher than in pulp, indicating the potential risk of peel consumption. We also observed that paclobutrazol degradation in mature mandarin was relatively slow, indicating it might not be efficient enough to hold mandarin fruits on trees for lowering paclobutrazol concentrations. Significant enantioselectivity was observed: the (2R,3R)-enantiomer was preferentially degraded in mandarin (whole fruit, peels, and pulp) but enriched in peach. Because of its more rapid degradation in mandarin and the lower levels observed in pulp compared with peels, potential endocrine-related side effects due to the (2R,3R)-enantiomer pose less of a risk in mandarin than in peach.

Paclobutrazol, with two stereogenic centers, but gives only (2R, 3R) and (2S, 3S)-enantiomers because of steric-hindrance effects, is an important plant growth regulator in agriculture and horticulture. Enantioselective degradation of paclobutrazol was investigated in rat liver microsomes in vitro. The degradation kinetics and the enantiomer fraction were determined using a Lux Cellulose-1 chiral column on a reverse-phase liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry system. The t1/2 of (2R, 3R)-paclobutrazol is 18.60 min, while the t1/2 of (2S, 3S)-paclobutrazol is 10.93 min. Such consequences clearly indicated that the degradation of paclobutrazol in rat liver microsomes was stereoselective and the degradation rate of (2S, 3S)-paclobutrazol was much faster than (2R, 3R)-paclobutrazol. In addition, significant differences between the two enantiomers were also observed in enzyme kinetic parameters. The Vmax of (2S, 3S)-paclobutrazol was more than 2-fold of (2R, 3R)-paclobutrazol and the Clint of (2S, 3S)-paclobutrazol was higher than that of (2R, 3R)-paclobutrazol after incubation in rat liver microsomes. These results may have potential implications for better environmental and ecological risk assessment for paclobutrazol.
