The Effect of Oxytetracycline on the Severity of Airsacculitis in Chickens Infected with Mycoplasma gallisepticum

Abstract: Four groups of mycoplasma-free commercial broilers were challenged with the R strain of Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) at 14 days of age. Groups received feed containing either no medication, or 500 ppm or 1000 ppm oxytetracycline (OTC) beginning at age 13 days, or 1000 ppm OTC beginning at age 15 days. All broilers were vaccinated with a live mild Massachusetts infectious bronchitis vaccine at 17 days of age. Air sac lesions were scored at age 24 days. In two almost identical experiments, all OTC treatment gro… Show more

“…Mycoplasma gallisepticum is a simple prokaryote that functions as the major pathogen of chronic respiratory disease (CRD; Levisohn & Kleven, 2000) in fowl. The disease is prevalent in commercial poultry farms with weak health control measures, CRD retards growth, decreases the laying rate, and lowers the feed conversion ratio (Glisson et al, 1989;Machado et al, 2012). The disease is difficult to eradicate because of its vertical transmission through the eggs (Lin & Kleven, 1982).…”

“…Tiamulin was more effective than the reference antibiotics in preventing and eradicating airsacculitis caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum. Glisson et al (1989) investigated the effect of oxytetracyline (OTC) on the severity of airsacculitis in chickens infected with Mycoplasma gallisepticum. There was a similarity in the efficacy of tiamulin studied by Youxiang et al (2003), who worked out the efficacy of tiamulin and chlortetracycline in feed in the control of CRD in broilers.…”

“…In the treatment of avian mycoplasmosis, antibiotics are frequently used in naturally infected birds (Hamdy et al, 1982;Glisson et al, 1989;Charleston et al, 1998;Hannan, 2000) but the development of resistance against various antibiotics has been reported by various scientists across the globe Gautier-Bouchardon et al, 2002;Pakpinyo and Sasipreeyajan, 2007). Tripathy et al (1972) treated the infraorbital swelling of peafowl with vitamin A and terramycin (intramuscular; I/M) and terramycin (0.5ml) infused into the swelling after removal of exudate.…”
