The Effect of Organizational Characteristics on the Appointment of Nonfamily Managers in Private Family Firms

Abstract: This article examines the effect of organizational characteristics (firm innovativeness, firm internationalization, firm size) on the appointment of nonfamily managers in private family firms while taking into account the moderating role of socioemotional wealth (SEW). While these organizational characteristics increase the need for expertise, family firms cope with a limited pool of family managers. Therefore, new creative knowledge from nonfamily managers is needed. However, results from a sample of 145 Belg… Show more

“…The presence of family members in a firm's management enhances family identification, influence and personal investment in the business, increasing their endowment in the firm and the need to protect it [49,50]. Therefore, we expect that firms directly influenced by the family-i.e., with family members involved in business management-are more prone to use sustainability disclosure in order to demonstrate that they respect societal values and that they are legitimate to continue their operations.…”

“…The concept of socioemotional wealth refers to "the stock of affect-related value that a family derives from its controlling position in a particular firm" [48] (p. 259). SEW draws on several dimensions which make family different from non-family firms and help to explain family businesses' heterogeneity [49,50]. Prior literature identifies five main dimensions: family control and influence on the business, identification of family members with the firm, binding social ties, emotional attachment of family members and renewal of family bonds to the firm through dynastic succession [48].…”

“…Sin embargo, solo en los últimos años diferentes estudios académicos (Vandekerkhof, Steijvers, Hendriks y Voordeckers, 2014;Dekker, Lybaert, Steijvers y Depaire, 2015;Hiebl, 2013) han focalizado su atención sobre este grupo de profesionales que desarrollan su trabajo entre el mundo de la empresa y de la familia.…”

“…For example, in a concise empirical model (e.g., Bammens, Notelaers, & Van Gils, 2015), the study parameters include specific theory and select constructs, thereby limiting the scope of references needed to 88. The Vandekerkhof et al (2015) study, however, included 103 references, due to the complexity of integrating literatures from top management teams, socioemotional wealth, innovativeness, and internationalization, as well as additional references needed to support the multiple analytical techniques used in this study.…”

“…In a study of 145 Belgian family firms (Vandekerkhof, Steijvers, Hendriks, & Voordeckers, 2015), an excellent example of integrating source theory with new research is provided beginning with the first sentence of the theory section: "Research in TMTs is rooted in upper echelon theory (Hambrick & Mason, 1984)" (p. 106), then following with relevant studies. The authors provide credit to the original source of TMT theory- Hambrick and Mason (1984)-as well as to the evolution of the theory through recent empirical testing relevant to the research question of the current study.…”
