The Effect of Orally Administered Herbal Medicines in Collagen, LPS, CFA Induced Rheumatoid Like Arthritis Animal Model: A Systematic Review of Animal Study Articles Published in Korea after 2008
Abstract:Objectives This study was designed to review animal studies about the efficacy of herbal medicine for Rheumatoid arthritis animal model which was published in Korea after 2008. We also systematically investigated the reporting quality of the animal studies. Methods We systematically searched original articles in 8 databases since 2008. And manual searching was conducted through 10 Korean medicine journals from 2008. Studies were included if they used animal experimental model(s) with orally administered herbal… Show more

Objectives This study was designed to evaluate the healing effect of Cordyceps Militaris (CM) on collagen II-induced arthritis rats. Methods Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 6 groups (normal, control, positive control, CM with low/medium/high dosage each). Type II collagen mixed with complete Freund's adjuvant (with 1:1 v/v) was injected subcutaneously, and the mixture was injected in a same manner one week after the first injection to boost arthritis. Arthritis index, paw thickness and von Frey test were conducted to observe physical changes. hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining was performed to observe knee cartilage. The levels of messenger RNA (mRNA) expressions of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in spleen were assessed by real-time polymerase chain reaction. Results Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that occurs on multiple joints and can lead to temporary shape change of bones or organ failure in severe cases. Here, we aimed to determine the effect of CM extract on rheumatoid arthritis by measuring paw thickness, arthritis index, conducting von Frey test and H&E staining, and evaluating the level of IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α. As a result, paw thickness, arthritis index significantly decreased in low concentration group, hind leg became less sensitive in all expermental groups. Also, histological analysis showed that the damage of knee cartilage was prevented in all experimental groups. The level of mRNA of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α in spleen was analyzed to decide the effectiveness of CM extract. IL-1β did not show significant change, but IL-6 and TNF-α showed significant decrease in at least one of the experimental groups. Conclusions CM showed protective effect on knee tissue destruction and improved the physical conditions of the leg involving arthritis. Also, it showed that CM has anti-inflammatory effect on specific cytokines inducing rheumatoid arthritis. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that the therapeutic potential of CM for the treatment rheumatoid arthritis, and set the foundation for the further studies. Objectives The purpose of this study was to assess the reporting quality of systematic reviews and meta-analyses in the Journal of Korean Medicine Rehabilitation (JKMR) using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) 2020 guidelines. Methods Systematic reviews and meta-analyses in JKMR, published from January 1991 to January 2022, were selected by searching the Korean studies Information Service System and JKMR homepage. Two independent researchers searched and selected systematic reviews and meta-analyses and evaluated the reporting quality of abstracts and main texts using the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Results Of 1,515 articles, 39 systematic reviews were finally included for assessment. Evaluation of abstracts resulted in 2 studies rated as high, 11 studies rated as moderate, and 26 studies rated as low. A maximum of 83.3% and a minimum of 25.0% of the items were reported in the abstracts. Evaluation of the manuscripts resulted in no studies rated as high, 14 studies rated as moderate, and 25 studies rated as low. A maximum of 67.9% and a minimum of 34.1% of the items were reported in the manuscripts. Conclusions To improve the quality of systematic reviews published in JKMR, it is necessary to conduct systematic reviews based on the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. (J
The aim of this study was to analyze the herbal prescription and composition of the leading experimental studies of herbal medicine extract in arthritis model and to analyze the way of setting model and the way of validating effect of the leading experimental studies of herbal medicine extract in arthritis model. Methods The Subjects were selected by select criteria and exclusion criteria from January 1, 2000 to September 30, 2017. The herbal prescription and composition of the selected subjects were analyzed. The effects and statistical significance of selected studies were verified by comparing the control and treatment groups of frequently used cytokines (tumor necrosis factor [TNF]-α, interleukin [IL]-1β, IL-6). Results 52 kinds of herbal prescriptions and 118 kinds of individual herbs were used in 64 studies. Among the 52 kinds of herbal prescriptions, Daeganghwal-tang (4 times) was used most frequently. Among the 118 kinds of individual herbs, Glycyrrhizae Radix (49 times), Angelicae Giantis Radix (34 times), Osterici Radix (24 times) were used most frequently in order. The prescription that has the highest TNF-α decline is Changchooldoin-tang. The prescription that has the highest IL-1β decline is Banggibokryeong-tang. The prescription that has the highest IL-6 decline is Gwanjeol8ho-bang. Conclusions Daeganghwal-tang (herbal prescription) and Glycyrrhizae Radix, Angelicae Giantis Radix, Osterici Radix (individual herbs) were used most frequently. The prescriptions that have the highest cytokines decline were Changchooldoin-tang, Banggibokryeong-tang and Gwanjeol8ho-bang.
