The Effect of Ophthalmic Surgery for Graves' Orbitopathy on Quality of Life: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: BackgroundGraves' orbitopathy has a profound negative impact on quality of life. Surgery is undertaken to preserve vision, correct diplopia and improve aesthetics. We sought to quantify the effect of different surgical approaches on quality of life. MethodsElectronic databases Ovid-MEDLINE, EMBASE were used from inception until 22 nd March, 2021 to identify studies assessing quality of life pre-and post-surgical intervention for Graves' orbitopathy. Two reviewers independently extracted data and performed qual… Show more

“…According to the US Food and Drug Administration, "a PRO is a measurement of any aspect of a patient's health status that comes directly from the patient (i.e., without the interpretation of the patient's responses by a physician or anyone else)" (1). The prognosis of benign thyroid diseases, including hypothyroidism, is generally good with appropriate treatment, although many patients experience major QoL impairments at the time of disease presentation (2)(3)(4)(5)(6). Furthermore, despite good biochemical management and/or definitive treatment (e.g.…”

“…A robust, valid, and reliable patient-centered QOL measure would go a long way toward enacting a shift to more thorough assessment of TED disease states and the influence of clinical management on it. To date, only the GO-QOL and TED-QOL ( 52 ) have been correlated with clinical outcome, with the GO-QOL utilized the most in clinical trials ( 10 , 40 , 42 , 43 , 45 , 57 ).…”
