The Effect of Off-Farm Employment on Agricultural Production Efficiency: Micro Evidence in China

Abstract: With ensuring food security becoming a priority for the Chinese government, the prevalence of off-farm employment (OE) may cast a shadow on agricultural productivity. Based on the data of the China Family Panel Studies in 2018, the Tobit model and threshold effect model have been applied to investigate the impact of off-farm employment on agricultural productivity efficiency (APE), measured by data envelopment analysis (DEA). The result has shown that: (1) OE contributes to a low level of APE. (2) Both self-em… Show more

“…Tobit model was used for checking which socio-economic variables are affecting the extracted efficiency scores (Hassen et al 2017 ; W Kamal and Ilmas 2017 ). As mentioned from (Chang et al 2022 ) the use of OLS model can be biased due to the potential inclusion of zero values extracted from the DEA implementation process. Martinsson & Hansson ( 2021 ) have used OLS to assess the effect of subsidies in the performance of dairy farms and their overall productivity.…”

“…Proficient behavior in complete sorting helps producers to increase competitiveness. Another benefit is that in order to survive, develop productive business diversification in agricultural activities, especially off-farm based on local resources and environmentally friendly [9], [40], [41], [42].…”

“…The first scenario involves rural laborers, initially in farming, switching to support their children's education in urban areas. These family members, more efficient in agriculture than in non-agricultural work, are compelled to take non-agricultural jobs, affecting their choice between the agricultural and non-agricultural sectors [56]. "Previously, both of us (the child's parents) were farming at home, planting corn, raising pigs and sheep.…”
