Microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology offers an alternative means for producing energy from waste products. In this review, several characteristics of MFC technology that make it revolutionary will be highlighted. First, a brief history presents how bioelectrochemical systems have advanced, ultimately describing the development of microbial fuel cells. Second, the focus is shifted to the attributes that enable MFCs to work efficiently. Next, follows the design of various MFC systems in use including their components and how they are assembled, along with an explanation of how they work. Finally, microbial fuel cell designs and types of main configurations used are presented along with the scalability of the technology for proper application. The present review shows importance of design and elements to reduce energy loss for scaling up the MFC system including the type of electrode, shape of the single reactor, electrical connection method, stack direction, and modulation. These aspects precede making economically applicable large-scale MFCs (over 1 m3 scale) a reality.

BACKGROUND Greywater and blackwater treatment is necessary to make sanitation and water reuse possible, and microbial fuel cells (MFCs) have emerged as a promising technology for achieving this objective. Ion exchange membranes play a key role in double chamber microbial fuel cell performance, but there are differences of opinion as to which membrane type is better. RESULTS This project was set up to study the effect of three ion exchange membranes (Nafion® 117, Ultrex™ CMI‐7000 and Ultrex™ AMI‐7001) in MFCs using greywater as catholyte in stacks of three microbial fuel cells each. The results demonstrate that the stacks with cationic membranes (Nafion® 117 and Ultrex™ CMI‐7000) generated higher power (201.50 ± 21.62 and 178.74 ± 56.89 mW m−3, respectively) than those with the anionic membrane stack Ultrex™ AMI‐7001 (71.57 ± 3.46 mW m−3). For the greywater catholyte, a 31% of chemical oxygen demand removal was achieved and proved to be an option as a catholyte in microbial fuel cells for countries that carry out wastewater separation. CONCLUSIONS The results obtained in this study demonstrated that an anion exchange membrane is not a better option for double chamber MFCs. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry

In the oil and gas industry, the production of oil field produced water is a common problem, especially in ageing fields. The current solution to produce water treatment is to partially treat the produced water through chemical means. However, little effort was taken into consideration to generate electricity through the treatment process. A microbial fuel cell is a bioreactor that converts chemical energy in chemical bonds to electrical energy with the presence of microorganism acting as biocatalyst. With increasing cost of oil field produced water treatment and the raising environmental concerns of produce water disposal. Microbial fuel cells have been widely discussed as a suitable treatment method of oil field produced water as well as a method for generating power through electricity generation. This paper discusses the ability of microbial fuel cell in treating by the removal of chemical oxygen demand and generating electricity from untreated and partially treated oil field produced water. The various pre-treatment methods provide different environments to study the effectiveness of the microbial fuel cell in treating the produced water and generating electricity. In conclusion, microbial fuel cells are capable of treating oil field produced water while generating electricity. At the end of the experiment, it was found that partial treatment that preserves the oil and grease content of the produced water proved to give the best balance between treatment capability of microbial fuel cell and the electricity generated.
