The Effect of Molecular Isomerism on the Barrier Properties of Polyimides: Perspectives from Experiments and Simulations

Abstract: A novel carbazole-containing diamine (M-2,7-CPDA) isomer of our previously reported diamine 2,7-CPDA, has been synthesized using a two-step synthesis. Compared with 2,7-CPDA, the substituted position of amino is changed from para to meta for M-2,7-CPDA. The two diamines were polymerized with pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) to prepare two isomeric polyimides (M-2,7-CPPI and 2,7-CPPI), respectively. The effects of para/meta isomerism on microstructures and gas barrier performances of the two isomeric polyimides … Show more

“…Moreover, the flat nature of 3BAO structure, , which is very similar to that of 4BAO, allows us to attribute any difference in gas permeation properties observed to the linkage position only. Similar studies have been performed on poly(etherimide)s, polyimides, thermally rearranged polymers, and poly(benzoxazole- co -imide) . A 3D representation of the imide ring region where the linkage occurs is illustrated in Figure a,c.…”

“…TPCPDFPPI displayed a weak and wide dispersing peak, implying its amorphous feature 42 . This was chiefly due to the incorporation of propeller‐shaped moiety and CF 3 units, which increased interchain spacing and disrupted the regularity of PI chains, thereby hindering the crystallization of PI 43,44 . As a result, the solubility of TPCPDFPPI was significantly improved.…”

“…In particular, we obtained 1.1 × 10 1 , 4.7 × 10 1 , 1.6 × 10 2 g m −2 d −1 , for 0%, 20%, and 50% pre-strain, respectively. Since the previous tests demonstrated a good Mg mechanical integrity at these strains, the effect of stretching-enhanced water permeation may be attributed to a larger free-void volume in the polymeric barriers, [58][59][60] to possible micro-delamination between PDMS and PI, or to the temporarily reduced thickness of the encapsulation during to the deformation, which allows water to penetrate through the encapsulation more rapidly. Additionally, the stress relaxation in the polymers (Figure 5g), the redistribution of stresses, and the plastic deformation around Mg (which occurs rapidly) can play a role in accelerating the water diffusion and the Mg corrosion.…”
