The Effect of Mixed Wastewaters on the Biomass Production and Biochemical Content of Microalgae

Abstract: The effect of ammonia and iron concentration in Bold Basal Medium and mixed wastewater (including pretreated piggery wastewater and acid mine drainage) on biomass production and biochemical content (lipid and ß-carotene) of microalgae (Uronema sp. KGE 3) was investigated. Addition of iron to the Bold Basal Medium enhanced the growth, lipid, and ß-carotene of Uronema sp. KGE 3. The highest dry cell weight, lipid content, and lipid productivity of KGE 3 were 0.551 g L-1, 46% and 0.249 g L-1 d-1, respectively, at… Show more

“…The authors reported an effective removal of TAN (36-100%); however, microalgal growth was higher in the leachate with the lowest TAN concentration. These results correlate with those achieved by Park et al [48]. In their study, the effect of TAN and Fe concentration in mixed wastewater on biomass production and biochemical content of microalgae was investigated.…”

“…It is defined by mononuclear cells, grouped into branched or unbranched filaments. The cell size does not exceed 10 µm (Park et al 2019). The chloroplast, representing the photosynthetic apparatus contains one or two pyrenoids, important for the atmospheric carbon concentration mechanism, found in many algae but not in the majority of terrestrial plants (Michetti et al 2010).…”
