The Effect of Misregistration Between CT-Attenuation and PET-Emission Images in 13N-Ammonia Myocardial PET/CT

Abstract: In 2-dimensional cardiac PET/CT, misregistration between the PET and CT images due to respiratory and cardiac motion causes tracer uptake to appear substantially reduced. The resolution and quality of the images have been considerably improved by the use of 3-dimensional (3D) PET acquisitions. In the current study, we investigated the impact that misregistration between PET and CT images has on myocardial 13 N-ammonia uptake in images reconstructed with 3D ordered-subset expectation maximization combined with … Show more

“…Cardiac displacement during acquisition is the principal source of artifacts in MP PET/CT and may lead to erroneous interpretation. It is well known that CT-based AC can introduce artifacts in PET images due to misregistration (17). The present study points out that cardiac displacement occurs more frequently, and with higher amplitude and longer duration, when adenosine rather than regadenoson is used, possibly because of physical complaints, anxiety, or panic during the stress study.…”

“…It is also ineffective when multiple movements occur during PET acquisition. Detrimental misalignment effects have been described previously both for static PET acquisitions (ACinduced artifacts) (17) and for dynamic acquisitions (errors in MBF calculations) (20).…”

“…Several studies have been performed to assess the impact of patient motion 82,83,[141][142][143][144][145] and many others have been performed with the aim of establishing methods to compensate or correct for it. 81,[146][147][148][149] information directly from the raw PET data 119,150 to help address intra-frame motion blurring.…”
