The Effect of Methanol on the Structural Parameters of Neuronal Membrane Lipid Bilayers

Abstract: The structures of the intact synaptosomal plasma membrane vesicles (SPMVs) isolated from bovine cerebral cortexs, and the outer and the inner monolayer separately, were evaluated with 1,6-diphenyl-1,3,5-hexatriene (DPH) and 1,3-di(1-pyrenyl)propane (Py-3-Py) as fluorescent reporters and trinitrophenyl groups as quenching agents. The methanol increased bulk rotational and lateral mobilities of SPMVs lipid bilayers. The methanol increased the rotational and lateral mobilities of the outer monolayers more than of… Show more

“…The chemical properties of methanol are known to modify the physical properties of cell membranes, such as their fluidity (Joo et al, 2012). These changes can be perceived by the cells and trigger the expression of genes that are involved in the acclimation of cells to new conditions (Los and Murata, 2004).…”

“…We have reported through our earlier study developed by prof. Yun in our laboratory the facile method to measure transbilayer asymmetric lateral mobility of native membrane lipid bilayers [40]. In this study, we report here developed by prof. Yun in the lavoratory the facile method to measure transbilayer asymmetric lateral and rotational mobilities of model membrane lipid bilayers.…”

“…The addition of methanol to produce citric acid is to neutralize negative impacts of metal ions [28]. [29] said that methanol would disrupt the structure of cell membranes composed of lipid and protein so that the cell's permeability became higher and therefore it enabled the metal ions to permeate the cell. Further, they added that alcohol with longer hydrocarbon chains such as ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, and butanol would damage the cell membranes.…”
