The Effect of Metformin on Oncological Outcomes in Patients With Cervical Cancer With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract: Our findings demonstrate that metformin use is associated with improved DFS, but not in OS in patients with cervical cancer with type 2 DM. Further large-scale and long-term follow-up studies are warranted to confirm the antitumor effects of metformin.

“…Additionally, metformin users also show a tendency toward sustained weight loss which is a potential benefit in obesity (Knowler et al, 2009). Many studies suggest that metformin use significantly decreased the incidence and improved survival outcomes of a wide range of cancers, such as breast, lung, liver, pancreatic, colorectal, prostate, cervical, and ovarian cancer, including those with EC (Zhan et al, 2014;Hanprasertpong et al, 2017;Xu et al, 2015). Although the exact mechanism is still not fully understanding, it is hypothesized that metformin's anti-cancer effects are mediated by indirect and direct effects on tumor growth (Viollet et al, 2012;Pollak et al, 2012).…”

“…Recent epidemiological studies have reported potential beneficial effects of metformin on gynecological cancers. Metformin use significantly decreased the risk or improved some survival outcomes among patients with cervical, breast, and ovarian cancer [68]. Moreover, several meta-analyses have shown that metformin use decreased the incidence and improved the survival of a wide range of malignant tumors, such as liver cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer, and colorectal cancer [915].…”

“…La presencia de Diabetes Mellitus tipo II y la toma de Metformina para su control se ha asociado con mejor supervivencia libre de enfermedad , aunque no con aumento de supevivencia global (45). Hanprasertpong (45) describe en su trabajo el análisis de 248 pacientes con CC y diabetes mellitus tipo II y hace dos grupos con las que tomaban metformina y las que no.…”
