Background: The amniotic sac, which houses the amniotic fluid that is a clear, slightly yellowish liquid that surrounds the foetus throughout pregnancy. This environment supports the foetus' natural growth and development.Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the association between oligohydramnios and different placental pathological lesions and its effect on fetal growth during pregnancy. Patients and method: This single cohort descriptive study was conducted in Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Faculty of Medicine, Zagazig University through the period from September 2020 to September 2022. A total of 48 pregnant women presented by oligohydramnios. Results: Neonates with isolated oligohydramnios had lower birth weights as a defining feature and a higher rate of neonatal morbidity with low Apgar score. They were admitted more often to neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Oligohydramnios is linked to a higher rate of surgical delivery and, consequently, a higher rate of maternal morbidity. Conclusion: Oligohydramnios without fetal structural and chromosomal abnormalities and in the absence of known maternal disease is associated with unfavourable neonatal outcomes as well as lesions caused by placental vascular malperfusion. We believe that it belongs to a spectrum of "placental insufficiency" (probably in a milder form than preeclampsia and fetal growth restriction).

Background and aim: Oligohydramnios is linked to different fetal and maternal conditions. Maternal hydration improves amniotic fluid content, because it promotes uteroplacental perfusion. The current work aimed to determine the results of intravenous hydration on the amniotic fluid index (AFI) and Doppler measurements of uteroplacental blood circulation during pregnancy with the third trimester oligohydramnios. Patients and methods: The current including 50 pregnant women in their third trimester with oligohydramnios. They were selected from the outpatient clinic at Al-Azhar University Hospitals. All were submitted to clinical evaluation by history and examination, followed by abdominal ultrasound and intravenous hydration therapy. Values before and after hydration were compared, delivery mode and fetal outcome were documented. Results: Maternal age was 30 ± 2.28. The majority of them were multigravida (58.0%) and higher percentage were multiparous (70.0%). The GA at delivery ranged between 32 and 37 weeks of gestation. There was a significant reduction of pulse, mean arterial pressure, temperature, hematocrit after hydration than before hydration. The birth weight ranged between 2765 and 3654 g. AF volume, AMF and uterine artery PI were significantly increased while umbilical artery PI was statistically decreased after hydration that corresponding values before hydration. The mode of delivery was normal vaginal delivery among 34% and cesarean section among 66.0% and the mean Apgar score was 7.8±1.9 and 8.9±0.87 at the first and fifth minutes, respectively. Conclusion: Intravenous maternal hydration therapy was safe and effective in terms of improvement of amniotic fluid index in pregnant females with isolated oligohydramnios in the third trimester. It enhanced the amniotic fluid volume and AFI in females with oligohydramnios.

Background Oligohydramnios and fetal growth restriction have been known for ages, with increased risk of disease and death during antenatal, neonatal, and adult life leading to operative interventions and perinatal mortality and morbidity. The amniotic fluid index varies with gestational age and is used to detect fetal well-being. Various oral and IV hydration and amino acid infusion therapies are studied to improve amniotic fluid index (AFI) and fetal weight. Objective To study the effect of intravenous amino acid infusion on AFI in pregnancies associated with oligohydramnios and fetal growth restriction (FGR). Material and methods A semi-experimental study done in Acharya Vinoba Bhave Rural Hospital (AVBRH), Sawangi Meghe, Wardha enrolled pregnant women in the in-patient department (IPD) unit of Obstetrics & Gynecology and divided them into two groups of 52 each, which met inclusion and exclusion criteria. Group A received IV amino acid infusion on an alternate day, whereas group B received IV hydration, and serial monitoring was done till delivery. Results The mean gestational age at admission was 32.73 ± 2.21 in the IV amino acid group and 32.25 ± 2.27 in the IV hydration group. In both groups, the mean AFI at admission was observed at 4.93±2.03 cm and 4.22 ± 2.00 cm, respectively. The mean AFI on the 14th day in the IV amino acid group was 7.52 ± 2.04, and in the IV hydration group, 5.89± 2.20 with a significant p-value of <0.0001.
