The effect of low‐level laser on the quality of dentin barrier after capping with bioceramic material: A histomorphometric analysis

Abstract: The study aims to investigate the quality of dentin barriers and pulp reaction to EndoSequence Root Repair Material (ERRM) combined with low‐level laser application. In eight dogs, pulps were exposed via class V, half of the samples received low‐level diode laser at 870 nm. Thereafter, cavities were capped with fast‐set or regular‐set ERRM. The specimens were processed for histomorphological and immunohistochemical examination after 2 weeks and 2 months. Dentin bridges were observed in all samples, and 87.5% w… Show more

“…Overall, the study suggests that LLLT in combination with effective dental capping materials holds promise in DPC [69]. In addition, Alsofi et al concluded in a study that LLLT in combination with EndoSequence root repair material shortens the inflammatory phase and enhances the healing [44], and Alharbi et al [70] showed that LLLT combined with bioactive ERRM is effective in inducing reparative dentin formation [70]. Moreover, it is interesting to note that in our study, the success rate achieved with the 980 nm diode laser combined with Ca (OH) 2 was lower compared to Yazdanfar et al's study [28], where they reported a 100% success rate using the 810 nm diode laser.…”

“…Clinically, Zhang et al [68] revealed that the success rate (89.4%) increases when a diode laser is used in combination with Ca (OH) 2 . Zhang et al included 50 patients with carious-related pulp exposure, and the success rate of the conventional DPC method was only 73.3% [70]. As for the CO 2 laser, Moritz et al [23], concluded based on 200 DPC procedures that the CO 2 laser is a valuable aid in direct pulp capping since at the 12-month follow-up, 89% of patients presented a successful treatment while only 68% had a successful treatment in the conventional group [23].…”

“…At a higher output energy, tissue surface-absorbing lasers with high absorption to water are primarily used for the incision or ablation of soft tissues or cutting hard tissues, whereas tissue-transmitting lasers with a low absorption in water are primarily used for the incision of soft tissues and pain relief [ 1 ]. These applications in dentistry are based on the thermal or photochemical effects of lasers on living tissues [ 2 ]. The irreversible changes in tissue caused by high-powered lasers are caused by a high-level laser therapy (HLLT) effect, whereas changes also occur around the tissue where irreversible changes occur.…”

“…Clinical studies also indicate that hypersensitivity treatment using semiconductor lasers has a suppressive effect and the irradiation of fibroblasts with semiconductor lasers results in significant cell activity [ 14 ]. In addition, laser irradiation after pulp capping increases the formation of repaired dentin [ 2 , 14 ]. These may be caused by the PBMT effect of the laser.…”
