The Effect of Irradiance on the Degree of Conversion and Volumetric Polymerization Shrinkage of Different Bulk-Fill Resin-Based Composites: An In Vitro Study

Abstract: Objective The influence of different light-emitting diode (LED) curing light intensities on the degree of conversion (DC) and volumetric polymerization shrinkage (VPS) of bulk-fill resin-based composite (RBC) restorative materials was evaluated. Materials and Methods Twenty-four specimens of each RBC material (Filtek one bulk-fill posterior, Reveal HD Bulk, Tetric N-Ceram, and Filtek Z350) were prepared. The RBCs were shaped in molds and cured using an LED curing light unit at high-intensity (1,200 mW/cm2) for… Show more

“…4 Bulk-fill composite resins are recognized to have a low polymerization shrinkage, and therefore, they seem to be able to reduce the stress at the tooth-restoration interface. 7 Because of this, they are used in direct restoring of dental elements, allowing to be packed in the dental cavity in a single dose (3 mm+) or greater dimension dose compared to conventional composites. 8 On the other side, literature reports that bulk-fill composites are inferior to conventional ones in terms of wear resistance and fracture toughness 9 ; accordingly, it may be advisable to cover their surface by using macrofilled resins, especially for flowable ones.…”

“…Hal et al properties such as translucency and surface gloss, both of which are influenced by the restorative material composition, 7 the type of inorganic filler particles, 10 distribution, index of refraction, 11,13 and the thickness of the composite restoration. 14 In the present study, xtra fil Bulk Fill composite showed least resistance to surface degradation after immersion in methyl ethyl ketone when compared to other groups. The reason for this value could be due to the higher amount of absorption of the solvent by the Bis-GMA molecule in x-tra fil matrix causing swelling of the material.…”

“…This fact can be justified by the composition of the organic matrix in these composites that allows greater dispersion of light or the presence of additional initiators that may consequently lead to favorable physical properties in the periphery. 24,25 The Valo LCU has four LEDs positioned in the different quarters of the tip diameter, which results in a nonuniform wavelength light beam emission because three LEDs emit blue light (two with peak emission at 460 nm and one with at 440 nm) and one LED emits violet light (peak emission at 405 nm). 20 Despite this fact, no differences in KHN were assessed in the center or periphery of the specimens for the bulk-fill resin composite with the additional initiator (Ivocerin).…”
