The effect of intermittent fasting on mortality in patients with type 2 diabetes and metabolic disease with high cardiovascular risk: a systematic review

Abstract: background. Intermittent fasting (IF) is a modern method of modifying eating behavior in patients who cannot tolerate calorie restriction. Intermittent fasting is effective in weight loss and has different types, which allows patients to adopt the type they are most comfortable with. Intermittent fasting has positive effects on human health, and this can lead IF to be adopted in standard medical care. There is insufficient data on the effect of IF on mortality and health status in patients with comorbid pathol… Show more

“…Intermittent fasting is one research topic that has attracted great attention in this regard. Intermittent fasting has positive effects on human health, and this may lead to intermittent fasting being adopted in standard medical care (Matiashova et al, 2021). Previous findings show that most respondents with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in the Karang Taliwang Health Centre working area have blood sugar levels that are classified as normal based on the results of research on the relationship between dietary compliance with blood sugar levels of patients with type 2 Diabetes Mellitus at Karang Taliwang Health Centre, Mataram City (Paramita et al, 2023).…”

“…The IF ultimately triggers a process called “the metabolic switch”, which shifts the metabolism from glycogenolysis to the mobilization of fat via fatty acid oxidation and ketogenesis, resulting in related biochemical pathway changes [ 1 , 19 , 20 ]. It is widely accepted that these changes under IF positively contributes to human health in multiple areas [ 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 ]. Recent studies in the field of neuroscience have found scientific evidence that IF exerts protective effects against multiple neurological diseases and disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease (AD) [ 25 , 26 ], Parkinson’s disease (PD) [ 27 , 28 ], multiple sclerosis (MS) [ 29 , 30 ], epilepsy [ 31 , 32 ], ischemic stroke [ 33 , 34 , 35 ], and depression [ 36 , 37 , 38 ].…”
