The effect of intergenerational programs on the mental health of elderly adults

Abstract: Intergenerational programs could serve as key health promoters among elderly people by decreasing the risk of social isolation and loneliness due to the greater sense of meaningfulness. However, given our limited sample size, generalizability was restricted and studies with larger cohorts are required to further validate our findings.

“…We examined the long-term effects of the REPRINTS program on the mental health of community-dwelling Japanese older adults. 18 We hypothesized that the REPRINTS program might improve the participants' sense of coherence and, in turn, reduce their depressive symptoms. A two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) found significant main effects of time on sense of coherence and significant interaction effects for sense of meaningfulness, with scores increasing over time.…”

“…The program is also expected to establish new social networks with members, children, teachers, and program staff, and contribute to the healthy upbringing of children. REPRINTS has long‐term effects (after 7 years) on intellectual activity, physical functioning, and intergenerational exchange, as well as short‐term effects (within 3 years) on grip strength, social network, subjective health, and sense of coherence . Similarly, older adults participating in the Experience Corps, which places volunteers in elementary schools to assist teachers with literacy and library functions, improve executive function and memory compared with controls …”
