The Effect of Influent Characteristics and Operational Conditions over the Performance and Microbial Community Structure of Partial Nitritation Reactors

Abstract: Nitrogen is a main contaminant of wastewater worldwide. Novel processes for nitrogen removal have been developed over the last several decades. One of these is the partial nitritation process. This process includes the oxidation of ammonium to nitrite without the generation of nitrate. The partial nitritation process has several advantages over traditional nitrification-denitrification processes for nitrogen removal from wastewaters. In addition, partial nitritation is required for anammox elimination of nitro… Show more

“…The oxidation of ammonium could be developed by different species of bacteria such as Nitrosomonas or Comamonas , which have been found regularly in MBR and hybrid MBBR–MBR systems treating regular‐salinity wastewater . Also, Thermomonas can oxidize ammonium and outcompete autotrophic ammonium oxidizing bacteria in certain environments with high NO2 or O 2 concentrations .…”

“…Much of the anammox process understanding developed from various commercial applications designed to exploit the capability of anammox bacteria [58][59][60][61]. Many of these systems involve optimization of a two-step process in which the first reactor or system employs partial nitritation of the available ammonia to nitrite to achieve the 'optimal' 1.2:1 nitrite to ammonia ratio feedstock for the second anammox reactor step converting these to nitrogen gas.…”

“…The development of the nitrogen concentrations over the study period is displayed in Figures S3 and S4 in the Supplementary Materials. The hydraulic retention time (HRT) remained stable at approximately 1.3 days and thus could not be held responsible for the enhanced conversion of ammonium to nitrite in 2014 even though prolonging the HRT has been shown to positively influence nitritation [25]. Although a positive correlation between TSS and nitrite concentrations would have been expected, this impact could not be conclusively clarified due to missing TSS values for 2015.…”
