The Effect of Individual Needs, Trust and Identification in Explaining Participation Intentions in Virtual Communities

Abstract: This paper studied individuals' intentions to participate in virtual communities. In order to assess what influences participation intentions, we studied individual-based factors (members' social needs and self expression needs), trust and identification. We found that although needs deficiency-based motivation theory is useful to explain participation intentions, trust and identification play an important moderating role.

“…Early research in digital engagement has identified major content-specific, media-specific and person-specific factors that increase the “likeability” and shareability of content. Digital engagement seems to be triggered by both emotional and rational motivational factors (Rafaeli and Ariel, 2008; Foster et al , 2010; Park et al , 2014) as well as environmental influences (Fan et al , 2009; Tedjamulia et al , 2005), personal characteristics (Bishop, 2007; Du, 2006; Han et al , 2007) and organizational commitment (Bateman et al , 2006).…”

“…The paradigm has widely been used to explain why people are willing to continue using an OC and make content contribution (Cheung and Lee, 2009). A study by Han et al (2007) found that individual needs significantly affect members' participation intention inside their online communities. Using a quantitative approach (Lampe et al, 2010) conducted a survey to examine people's behaviour and their reasons for participating in an online community comparing two theories: Use and Gratification and Organizational Commitment theory.…”

“…Participation measures and factors have been investigated in order to verify the role of financial incentives in participation (Deci;Koestner and Ryan, 1999), to notice the aims and needs of users (Kim, 2000), the reasons which lead members to participate (Hemmetsberger and Pieters, 2001), the feeling of recognition by individuals (Chan et al, 2004), the theory of gratification and use (Sangwan, 2005), the influence of posts and visualizations of the content (Koh et al, 2007), the effectiveness of web services (Welch and Pandey, 2007), the measure of interactivity among members (Adiele and Ehikioya, 2007) and the need, identification and confidence of participant members (Han;Zheng and Xu, 2007).…”
