The effect of Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy on gastric antral myoelectrical activity and gastric emptying in patients with non‐ulcer dyspepsia

Abstract: Disturbed gastric emptying and antral myoelectrical activity play roles in NUD. H. pylori-induced disturbed gastric emptying may cause some NUD symptoms. Gastric emptying and symptom scores are improved by H. pylori eradication therapy in NUD patients with disturbed gastric emptying; H. pylori eradication therapy is effective in H. pylori-positive NUD patients with disturbed gastric emptying.

“…The gastric emptying is a functional marker, while myoelectrical activity is an electrophysiological marker for the evaluation of gastric motility. Therefore, such a discrepancy could occur in our previous study (11).…”

“…Myoelectrical activities of 2-4 cycles per min were defined as the normal range. Pre-and post-prandial myoelectrical activity showing over 70% of the normal range was defined as a normal EGG as described in our previous reports (11,12). The rate of gastric emptying was determined by measuring the plasma concentrations of paracetamol 45 minutes after oral intake of 1.5 g paracetamol with a 200 ml semi-liquid meal (OKUNOS-A, Horikawa Foods, Niigata, Japan) as described in our previous reports (11,12 …”

“…Kachi et al [8], as well as Miyaji et al [23], reported that GE was improved by H. pylori eradication in patients with initially disturbed gastric evacuation. On the other hand, Koskenpato et al did not observe statistically significant differences in GE between H. pylori-eradicated and placebo-treated patients after 1 year [21].…”

“…Miyaji et al analysed the gastric emptying in patients with non-ulcer dyspepsia and reported that the gastric emptying was normalized significantly by the eradication therapy in the delayed and rapid gastric emptying groups, but unchanged in the normal gastric emptying groups. 18 Saslow et al found that H. pylori infection and gastritis resulted in reduced accommodation (diastolic dysfunction) but no change in gastric emptying of solids in asymptomatic volunteers. 19 13 C-acetate breath test is proposed to be a reliable, non-invasive test to measure gastric emptying rates of liquid test meals.…”
