The Effect of Hypermedia Assisted Instruction on Second Language Learning

Abstract: Literature on hypermedia has been growing. Although its potentials and educational implications are being explored, not much empirical research has been done to substantiate its rich theoretical assumptions and verify its promises. The purpose of this study was to provide some results on the practical application of the technology. It intended to investigate the effect of hypermedia technology on enhancing vocabulary learning among non-native English speakers.

“…and how comfortable a user feels using it (CSUQ 6), Field Dependent users find the BLC easier to operate and to learn than Field Independent and Intermediate users. It may be due to the fact that the simplicity of the BLC helps Field Dependent users to avoid the problem of feeling lost in hyperspace (Liu and Reed, 1994). In respect of functionality provided, Intermediate users have more positive perception than Field Dependent and Field Independent user.…”

“…The second aspect that received major attention was the acquisition of vocabulary for supporting reading comprehension (Chun & Plass, 1996;Grace 1998Grace , 2000Kang & Dennis, 1995;Liu, 1995;Liu & Reed, 1995). These studies showed that computer-supported glossing formats proved to be helpful in developing reading proficiency and that vocabulary learning could be greatly enhanced by incorporating a variety of annotations for words through visual media in multimedia technology.…”

“…The main difference between Cluster 1 and Cluster 7 is that the users of the former prefer to use "Word or Phrase" and those of the latter favor to use "Author/Title". Field Independent users tend to actively explore the systems by themselves (Liu and Reed 1994) and jump from one point to another in hyperspace (Chen 2002), which explains that they tend to use "Word or Phrase", providing information without a predefined structure. Conversely, Field Dependent users tend to take a passive approach by relying on salient cues (Anastasi, 1988) and have more difficulties in separating the individual parts within a whole (Witkin et al 1977).…”

“…Other searching functionalities, including the advance search interface, are not needed as part of the interface. The simplified interface that uses basic search with word or phase will provide Field Independent users with suitable navigation support to explore the system by themselves (Liu and Reed 1994).…”
