The effect of Helicobacter pylori eradication on liver enzymes in patients referring with unexplained hypertransaminasemia

Abstract: Background:Evidence has shown an association of Helicobacter pylori infection with liver dysfunction and damage. We investigated if H. pylori eradication affects liver enzymes in patients referring with unexplained hypertransaminasemia.Materials and Methods:Patients with mild unexplained hypertransaminasemia accompanied with dyspepsia and confirmed H. pylori infection were studied. Viral, metabolic, autoimmune, and drug/toxin induced hepatitis as well as fatty liver were all ruled-out by appropriate tests. Pat… Show more

“…14,15 There is a relationship between H. pylori bacterial infection and aminotransferase activity, liver cirrhosis, and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection because they co-promote hepatic fibrosis and promote co-infection. [16][17][18][19] H. pylori also maybe has a role in hepatic cancer as a co-infection with HBV. Recently, hepatitis B virus (HBV) Ag was detected in the gastric mucosa of patients infected with H. pylori.…”

“…However, only a tiny fraction of infected individuals develop ITP-HP [ 11 ]. Platelet response to documented bacterial eradication varies across studies, ranging from 0% to 7% in the US series and up to 100% in the Japanese series [ 10 - 12 ]. Successful bacterial eradication has been shown to provide benefits compared to unsuccessful or no eradication [ 12 , 13 ].…”
