The Effect of Helicobacter Pylori and Economic Status on Growth Parameters and Leptin, Ghrelin, and Insulin-Like Growth Factor (IGF)-I Concentrations in Children

Abstract: We suggest that H. pylori may impair growth significantly only in susceptible children where unfavorable socioeconomic conditions facilitate its action, probably through mechanisms, at least in part, involving growth-related molecules.

“…For instance, H. pylori has been reported to confer protective effects against esophageal cancer (Islami & Kamangar 2008), but on the other hand, together with hepatitis B and C viruses, and human papillomaviruses, the bacterium is responsible for about a third of all cancers attributable to infections, mainly including gastric, liver, and cervix uteri cancers (de Martel et al 2012, Sakitani et al 2012. In addition, silent infection with H. pylori is a source of pro-inflammatory cytokines and IGF1 in hyperinsulinemia conditions (Aguilera et al 2004, Ozen et al 2011. Unraveling the precise role of ILP molecules in H. pylori-related carcinogenesis may provide novel pharmacological targets for microorganism-related cancers.…”

“…H. pylori infection is associated with growth failure and possibly lower ghrelin levels (10). On the other hand, the likelihood of the association between H. pylori and growth failure still remains controversial (11)(12)(13)(14)(15)(16)(17). Some researchers assert that the association of H. pylori infection and growth failure is not a cause-effect relation, but rather, a coincidence of these two entities in low socioeconomic conditions (19).…”

“…Potential relationships between gastrointestinal disease associated with H. pylori, and ghrelin, growth and appetite still remain unclear, because other factors like socioeconomic status may also be involved (10)(11)(12).…”
